The Australian Shepherd originated in the American West on ranches as stock dogs, guardians of livestock and their families who owned them. They were capable of moving stock over long distances and keeping a watch- ful eye over their charges. Aussies retain a strong herding instinct that is controllable and are noted for their intelligence, loyalty and devotion to there owners, willingness to please, energetic temperament and trainabil- ity. These dogs are taking over the world not only as great family companions, but also as therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, narcotic detection dogs, agility, flyball, disc dogs, you name it an Aussie can do it. Also many are still used today as stock dogs on farms and ranches around the world.
